Originating in India, Ayurveda literally translates to ‘the science of life’. Over time the ancient teachings of this 5,000 year old comprehensive medical system have been handed down by Indian Sages as a part of their spiritual tradition.
Today, Ayurveda encompasses prevention, healing and longevity as a holistic science. Although very detailed in its teachings Ayurveda aims to prevent disease and to rejuvenate the mind and body. Numerous Ayurvedic herbal combinations have been used effectively in the treatment of skin conditions and for the promotion of a clear and healthy complexion. More recently many of these treatments have been comprehensively studied by scientists and some excellent clinical findings now allow us to utilise this knowledge of the past.
Ayurveda holds an elemental view of the universe and believes people are made up of various combinations of these elements. The five elements are Air, Ether, Fire, Earth and Water. These elements form the three biological humours of Ayurveda, called Doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
The dominance of a particular dosha determines certain physical, mental and emotional characteristics, and importantly may predetermine potential health risks.
All three doshas are present in every cell of the body. However each dosha has an area of dominance, which is their site of origin; Vata primarily resides in the colon, Pitta in the small intestine and Kapha the stomach.
The seasons also have doshas so balance with our environment is also important.
