Kapha Self-care Rituals

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” Aristotle

Kaphas are the nurturers, known for their chilled-out attitude. They are laid back and loving and easy to get along with, but when they are not in balance, they can tend towards feeling insecure and become envious. Water and earth are the elements of Kapha and they have qualities such as oily, cold, heavy and slow. These translate into things like smooth soft skin, a dislike for exercise, a preference for warm climates and a prone to crave sweet and fatty foods. Kapha types tend towards stagnation so creating stimulating rituals is a wonderful way to help balance out the dominance of Kapha and can create more balance in your life generally.

Morning Ritual

  • Kaphas love to sleep and not to wake up! They are encouraged to wake up around 5:30am to pacify the imbalance

  • Start your day with a glass of warm water with honey and ginger to help you wake up to the world

  • Stand on the ground barefoot for 5 minutes – feel the earth, sand or grass under your feet and ground yourself before the overload of technology

  • Allow some time for your meditation practice – even 10 minutes will be beneficial

  • If you are waking up at 5:30am, hopefully you will have time to do this before the rest of the house rises

Evening Ritual

  • Start to wind down around 9:30pm

  • Turn off electronic devices

  • Light some candles and listen to some relaxing music

  • Take a warm bath

  • Try and be asleep by 10pm

Exercise Ritual

Kapha can tend towards stagnation and have a strong dislike for exercise. They need to pacify this imbalance by engaging in high impact exercise (preferably every day) such as running and cycling.

Self-Massage Ritual

  • A stimulating Abhyanga self-massage is an excellent way to help balance the Kapha dominance. This is the traditional full body Ayurvedic massage... starting at the tip of the head and working down the body until you reach the feet. Use some stimulating warmed Kapha Oil rubbed in a circular motion. Leave the oils on for at least 20 minutes before showering off

  • If you don’t have time for a full body massage, then a foot massage can be amazing at the end of the day... the foot is full of reflex points and you can activate the whole-body from massaging the feet.

  • It is important to use a massage oil specifically blended to pacify your Kapha dosha; the Kapha Oil Blend I use is formulated from 8 herbs, known to invigorate and uplift the senses. A traditional remedy for tired skin, natural exfoliates and powerful antioxidants help to stimulate and recharge the skin for pure radiance. The oil is lightly scented with frankincense, lime and neroli.

In order for self-care to be effective we need to make it a daily ritual or routine. Our lives are becoming busier and busier and we need to self-care more to maintain balance and wellness. We create balance by maintaining routines that pacify our own unique dosha.

Try to make time at least once a month for an extra special time of self-care... book a Body Ritual or a Facial Ritual, specific to the Kapha dosha...
